As November is coming to an end and we are drawing closer to Winter this is the perfect time for hot chocolates and cosy evenings on the sofa. With the shorter darker days some of us may forget about our gardens. We have put together some helpful tips which you may find useful to prepare your garden for Winter.
- Prune and deadhead your roses to prevent wind-rock. This will keep the plant healthy and shape it correctly.
- Protect newly planted, trees, hedges and shrubs from the wind and cold if there is no natural shelter.
- Raise containers onto pot feet or something similar, to keep the bottom of the pots out of the water. This helps to prevents waterlogging and compost freezing.
- Leaves are falling rapidly. Rake fallen leaves from your lawns, ponds and beds. If fallen leaves are left on your lawn it could block out the light and moisture from your grass.
- Grass will continue to grow in temperatures above 5 degrees. If the weather remains mild and your grass is not waterlogged it may be necessary to trim your lawn with a mower. (Raise the height of the blade to avoid turf stress). Mowing will also help to deal with any annual weeds.
- Apply mulch during the Winter months as there will be little loss of nutrients and organic matter and the rain will help wash soluble nutrients down to the root. This will also help prevent weeds from germinating.
Happy gardening !!
